My blogging has been considerably lacking for July as I have
been preoccupied with two creative ventures, one a success and the other a
failed success.
Dan Aderton and I tried to commit to writing an hour per day
for a whole month. I attempted a
short story that I still hope to finish, just not within July – the first two
weeks went well, but then life and apathy caught up with me. An hour for anything is a hefty
commitment.
I joined the Payne’s in taking a picture every day. This was much easier than the preceding
goal, and a lot more fun. It’s
already proven to be life changing.
Great insight by Justin Payne, revealed to me that photography is an
introverted act in the midst of extroversion, which is a great balance for
myself who is naturally the former, and increasingly becoming the latter. Frustrated by inconsistent image
quality I finally upgraded my point and shoot to a Nikon d5100. As of now I’m definitely getting my
money’s worth, probably taking on average, fifty pictures a day since I got
it. The new camera, however, may
have made me a lazier photographer, as with my point and shoot I had to rely
more on “framing” to get a decent image (Still don’t understand the rule of
thirds…) but now with the Nikon any picture I take looks moderately
decent.
If the old adage is true, that a picture is indeed worth a
thousand words, then photography should be a complimentary fit to writing. The one thing I definitely appreciate
about photography is its ability to capture and recall memories. Going through the various pictures from
this last month, I’ve been able to remember, more or less the major events of
each day, and even small details and moments. Taking a picture has proven to be much more efficient and
effective than journaling – which I have failed to accomplish despite many
tries. I once heard that an
experience is only fulfilled if we can remember it, and I believe that to be
the case.
I posted on Facebook an album of my daily photos from July. Here are some others pics from the month:
